Amex Gold vs CSP for Families: Grocery Bills, Dining Out, and Authorized Users (2026)

Families spend more on groceries and dining than any other demographic. That makes the Amex Gold's 4x multipliers exceptionally powerful. But CSP's free authorized users and Costco compatibility matter too.

Average Family Spending Profile

According to BLS data, the average US family of four spends:

Grocery Math for Families

This is where Gold dominates. At family-level grocery spending, the 4x vs 1x gap becomes massive:

Total Family Value: $6,000/Month Spend

For a family spending $6,000/month ($1,000 groceries, $600 dining, $300 travel, $60 streaming, $4,040 other) with 2 authorized users:

Gold wins by $743/year for this family spending profile. The grocery advantage alone ($540) more than covers the authorized user fees ($70) and fee premium ($230).

Strategy: One Parent Gets Each Card

For maximum optimization, one partner carries Amex Gold (for dining and groceries) while the other carries CSP (for travel, streaming, and Costco). This gives the household access to both Membership Rewards and Ultimate Rewards ecosystems without paying for authorized users.

Combined household fee: $420/year. After all credits: -$54/year net. The household earns optimally in every category and has access to every major transfer partner through both programs. See our both cards strategy for the detailed category split.

Family FAQ

How much does an Amex Gold authorized user cost?
Each authorized user on the Amex Gold costs $35 per year. For a family of four with two authorized user cards, that adds $70 to the annual cost, making the total fee $395 before credits. CSP authorized users are free, which is a meaningful advantage for families. However, Gold's higher earn rates on groceries and dining typically more than offset the authorized user fees.
Which card is better for families that shop at Costco?
CSP, without question. Costco only accepts Visa for credit card payments, so the Amex Gold cannot be used there at all. Additionally, Costco codes as a warehouse club, not a supermarket, so even if Amex were accepted, it would earn only 1x. If Costco is your primary grocery store, CSP is the only option between these two cards.
Is the Amex Gold worth it for a family of four?
Yes, in most cases. A family of four typically spends $800-1,200/month on groceries and $400-600/month dining out. At $1,000/month groceries and $500/month dining, Gold earns 90,000 points/year ($1,350 at 1.5cpp) vs CSP's 30,000 ($450). Even after the $70 authorized user fees and $325 annual fee, Gold's net value far exceeds CSP's for grocery-heavy families.
